D11 - Friday 19-5-06 Urumqi

After the Kanas and Heaven Lake tours, today was the most relaxing one and we just focussed our visit on two major tourist sights in Urumqi ie Xinjiang Autonomous Region Museum & the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar.

1) In the morning, we took a bus to the Xinjiang Museum (Rmb25) and spent 2 hrs there looking at the various exhibits , artefacts of historical importance. There were a series of old pictures depicting the political developments thast took place in Xinjiang for the last 400 yrs. All these years, the Uighurs , Karakhanid and Karakhita tribal kindgoms had a great influence in Xinjiang in terms of culture, food & customs. No photography was allowed inside the museum.

2) Next, we took a taxi and visited the popular Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar. The bazaar had a number of souvenir and food stalls and we really enjoyed our time there. We had a taste of local ice cream and it was really good. Tourists had a great time patronising the various stalls selling hand made knives, sliver and pewter wares, jewellery , Hotan white jade stones , musical instruments etc. Some building structures there were quite unique reflecting a truly Xinjiang character. We walked into a Carrefour Hypermarket and bought some local snacks to bring home.

" Urumuqi is not a ulu place at all. What I saw and experienced in this northern Xinjiang city was very exotic and interesting "
